Cleveland Westside Village
It’s been said that getting old is not for the faint of heart, but it beats the alternative.
Cleveland Westside Village is a network of residents who help each other enjoy life either before or after retirement, while meeting the challenges of living in our homes. To accomplish these goals, we formed a nonprofit organization based on the model of the Village concept which originated in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston more than twenty years ago. Since then, a national movement has grown consisting of more than 200 such groups.
Residents seeking help with, for example, a ride to the doctor’s office, help with shopping or their computer, put in a request to which other members respond. These are submitted either online or by telephone, with confidentiality to insure privacy. There are no obligations and members respond as they can.
We are also a social and educational group. We have sponsored more than twenty talks on a wide range of subjects such as hearing loss, brain function, estate planning and green burial, led by professionals in their fields. These and our social functions: outdoor concerts, a monthly ethnic dining out and game nights are all open to the general public as well as members. Other activities are a walking group, a book club and pop-up events such as movie nights.
Our dues are $75 per member per year, which can be negotiated for members who find that beyond their means. You must be 55 or older to join, but please pass this information to neighbors and friends who might be interested. All are welcome to participate in our general activities.
Cleveland Westside Village covers the Ohio City, Detroit Shoreway and Edgewater neighborhoods. Our website (Clevelandwestside.helpfulvillage.com) has a calendar of upcoming events and a membership page where you can get on our mailing list.
