Ohio City is located on the Near West Side of Cleveland, across the Cuyahoga River from Downtown Cleveland. The neighborhood sits just south of Lake Erie and is home to over 8,000 residents and more than 250 businesses.

  • Over 8,000 Residents

    Ohio City is one of 34 recognized neighborhoods within the city of Cleveland and is home to more than 10,000+ residents.

  • Diverse Population

    The 2024 Census data lists the Ohio City neighborhood as one of Cleveland’s most diverse, with 56% of the area being White, 25% African American, 16% Hispanic, <1% Asian or Pacific Islander, 1.6% American Indian, and 7.8% noted as “other.”

  • Housing Mix

    Ohio City contains 2,000 units of public housing, with 36% of its total population living below the poverty line.  

  • Population Growth

    While the city of Cleveland on the whole has been experiencing a loss in population in the past several decades, Ohio City is one of only three Cleveland neighborhoods that gained population in the past ten years. Ohio City also indicated a 16% growth among ages 18–34 and 42% growth in ages 60–64.

DID YOU KNOW?

James A. Garfield, who later became the 20th president of the United States, served as pastor of Franklin Circle Christian Church in 1857.

James Ford Rhodes, who was the rare combination of millionaire businessman and Pulitzer Prize winning historian, was born and raised in Ohio City. His brother Robert’s house is a landmark at 2905 Franklin Boulevard.

A plaque from the Ohio Historical Society on Bridge Avenue marks what is believed to be the birthplace of John Heisman, the innovative football coach. Some historians contend that he was actually born a few blocks farther to the west on the same street and the sign was moved to the current location at 3928 Bridge Avenue.
